Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Hits Aceh, Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake jolted Aceh and Papua province on early hours of today, September 2.
A quake measuring 5.0 magnitude on the Richter scale hit Sinabang City, Simeulue, Aceh at 05:41 Western Indonesian Time (WIB) and had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) informed the quake’s epicenter was at 44 kilometers southeast of Sinabang Aceh or precisely at 2.10 degrees north latitude and 96.51 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 21 kilometers above sea level.
Meanwhile, a 3.6 magnitude quake rocked areas of Mount Jayawijaya, Papua at 00:13 WIB. The quake was centered in the land at a depth of 18 kilometers.
The earthquake was located in 21 kilometers southeast of Jayawijaya, 4.19 degrees south latitude and 138.82 degrees east longitude, BMKG reported. The tremor was felt in the II MMI level, a shallow one with no potential to cause damage.
